Brittle star (Ophiacantha rosea)

Description

Notes: Three specimens attached to a black board inside a rectangular glass jar. The top specimen is the smallest in size and has started to contract the appendages. Each specimen has five appendages. The specimens are off white/cream colour with light brown patches. Attached to the outside of the glass jar is a black label attached to a brown piece of material tied aroundthe glass jar. Hand written in white ink on the label is '"BRITTLE STAR". Ophiancantha rosea, Lym. SOUTH AMERICA. [Station 308.]' Typed in black in on an off white label on the bottom of the black label is 'From Trustees, Brit. Mus. "Challenger Coll"'. Hand written in pencil on off white paper placed inside the jar is 'Ophiacantha rosea station 308'. There is no liquid left in the jar and the specimens are completely dry and appear brittle. The top specimen has started to shrink and contract the appendages. The black board in the jar moves when the jar is moved.
