mollusc (Turbo chrysostomus)

Description

Notes: An original label glued to the face of the specimen box, has an ink handwritten label stating: "549. Torq. Mus. Chall. Exped./ Senectus chrysostomus, Linn/ Fiji Islands. Suez.". 549 correspondends to an entry in the Catalogue of the Conchological Collections in the Perth Museum, by Henry Coates, FSA, dated 1925 (p.12) which states "Reef of Tongalabu (Chal. Exped.). The recent Perth Museum label refers to Ceylon, Suez and Fiji and a date of 1874, from which there is no further reference. The Challenger sailed through the Suez Canal en route to the Fiji Islands (Google). A recent loose label stating "Ceylon" and the reference to Torquay Museum, is unexplained. See 1979.1468.267 (1899.54.21 in the 1899 Perth Museum accession register). The number"549" is also recorded for the Challenger specimen, "1979.1468.232" (Turbo chrysostomus, from a reef at Tongatabu).
