Description

Notes: Two brittle star specimens mounted onto a black board and placed in a rectangular glass jar. The lid of the jar is loosely placed on top of the jar. The specimens are off white/cream in colour, some part are light brown in colour and each has five appendages. The top specimen displays the top of the specimen. The bottom specimen displays the underside of the specimen. Attached to the outside of the glass jar is a black label attached to a brown piece of material tiead around the glass jar. Hand written in white ink on the label is '"BRITTLE STAR". Ophiocoma brevipes, Pet. ST THOMAS ISLAND.' Typed in black ink on an off white label on the bottom of the black label is 'From Trustees, Brit. Mus. "Challenger Coll"'. Hand written in pencil on off white paper inside the jar is 'Ophiocoma 2'.There is no liquid left in the jar and the specimens are completely dry and appear brittle. Some of the smaller spines on the appendages are damaged, they have either fallen off or bent. The lid is only placed on top and is broken on half, therefore can easily fall off, so care should be taken whilst handling the jar.
