Notes: Handwritten label accompanying specimen reads "From the trawl. Oct 16. 1875 Lat. 33?. 29' S Long 133? 22 W. S Pacific Ocean. 2335 fathoms. Bottom red clay. Part of a whales tympanic bone encrusted & replaced by peroxide of manganese. On the white area an Actinia was attached & had protected the bone from incrustation. PTO The trawl came up full of manganese nodules sharks teeth whales tympanics & other encrusted bone fragments. ---".
