Copyright/attribution: Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

Description

Notes: Two sea urchin specimens attached to a black board placed into a rectangular glass jar. The top specimen displays the underside of the animal and the bottom specimens are grey/lilac in colour. Some of the spines have broken off. The lid of the jar is missing. The bottom right hand side of the jar is broken, exposing part of the inside of the jar to the outside conditions. Attached to the outside of the glass jar is a black label attached to a brown piece of material tied around the glass jar. Hand written in white ink on the label is '"SEA URCHIN." Near Echinometra lucunter, Blain, ? PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.' Typed in black ink on an off white label on the bottom of the black label is 'From Trustees, Brit. Mus. "Challenger Coll"'. There is no liquid left in the jar and the specimens are completely dry and appear brittle and fragile. Some of the spines have broken off. The lid is missing and the bottom right hand side of the jar is broken so care should be taken when handling the glass jar.
