Description

Notes: Specimen in rectangular glass-topped box. Handwritten label by A.H. Green attached to lid reads "Pele's Hair. Sandwich Islands. Presd. by Prof. Thistleton Dyer". Blue/green printed labels attached to lid read "Presented by Prof. Thistleton Dyer.", "PELE's HAIR." and "Sandwich Islands.". Letter from F.B. Atkins (Curator of Mineral Collections at Oxford University Museum) to F.D. Williams (Associated Professor of Chemistry, Michigan Technological University), dates 9 September 1977, mentions "Pele's hair from 'the Sandwich Island' (i.e. the Hawaii Group), presented by W.T. Thistleton Dyer, who was also a member of the Challenger Expedition. It seems extremely probably therefore that this was also collected from Kilauea at the same time.".
